Abaco – The Pirates Haven

Abaco is one of the Bahamas Islands. The Bahamas were literally named for their shallow seas, ‘baja mar,’ and Abaco is one of the most beautiful islands in the group.

This paradise on the water has to be one of the most peaceful places in the world. Early settlers were slaves and loyalists, church going, God fearing people with uncompromised standards and an ability to work hard.

Everything in Abaco seems to be constructed with skill and care, the boats, the houses, the gardens, are all created and maintained with love and pride. Perhaps that is the secret of a successful community, one that respects craft and skill. Whatever it is, it’s in Abaco in abundance, that is for sure.

The locals are hospitable and laid back, mostly self reliant tradespeople and craftsmen and they are more than pleased to pass the time of day and tell you about the islands. There is plenty to do with your time here. Sit in one of the harbour front restaurants and watch a yacht race, take a trek through the shops or collect some beautiful shells. Take a boat out for a picnic and watch the dolphins playing alongside. Sit on one of the incredible sun soaked beaches and wait for the sunset.

It is hardly surprising that sixteenth century pirates were happy to wait around Abaco for unsuspecting Spanish galleons to exploit. The Bahamas were custom designed for a bit of pillaging. The myriad of islands and little coves made it easy for pirates to hide their vessels until a nice rich galleon came along, lumbering through the treacherous sandbars with an overloaded cargo hold. They would then hide their loot in the coastal caverns.

Privateers were as much of a problem as the pirates, as they robbed the ships just the same but with a Letter of Marque, which was little more than a licence to steal. They terrorized the seas and chased law abiding citizens into exile, making the islands their own and generally being very naughty.

In the early part of the 1700s the British Government decided enough was enough and sent Governor Rogers to clean the pirates out of the Bahamas. Most of them were brought to trial and hanged but their legends live on.
